Linen Support

Linen FAQ

What is Linen?

Linen is a clean markdown reader and editor for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Write in GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), see a live preview, and keep your notes organized.

Which devices are supported?

Linen runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The same app works across Apple devices you are signed into with the same Apple ID for purchases.

What markdown does Linen support?

Linen supports GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), including:

  • Headings
  • Bold and italic
  • Lists and task lists
  • Tables
  • Code blocks
  • Links

How does editing and preview work?

On iPhone and iPad: Switch between Edit and Preview.

On Mac: Choose Source, Preview, or Split (source and preview side by side).

Where are my notes stored?

Notes are stored locally on your device. Linen does not sync notes through iCloud or a Linen account.

If you delete the app or lose your device without a backup, your notes may be lost. Export important notes regularly.

How many notes can I create for free?

The free version includes up to 5 notes.

Upgrade to Linen Pro for unlimited notes.

What are folders?

Linen lets you organize notes in folders, including nested folders (folders inside folders).

Use folders to group notes by project, topic, or however you work.

How do I create a new note?

Tap or click the New Note menu. Options include:

  • Blank note
  • Meeting Notes template
  • Task List template
  • GFM Reference (markdown cheat sheet)
  • Open Markdown (import a .md file)
  • Paste as New Note (from clipboard)

On Mac you can also drag and drop markdown files into the app.

Can I import existing markdown files?

Yes. Use Open Markdown or drag a .md file into Linen on Mac.

Can I export my notes?

Yes. Linen can export notes as:

  • Markdown (free)
  • HTML (Linen Pro)
  • PDF (Linen Pro)

Use the export option from the note menu or toolbar.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open the Linen Pro screen in the app and tap Restore Purchases.

Use the same Apple ID you used to buy Linen Pro. Restoring does not charge you again.

I bought Linen Pro but it is not unlocked. What should I do?

Try these steps:

  1. Tap Restore Purchases in the app.
  2. Make sure you are signed into the correct Apple ID (Settings > Apple Account).
  3. Check your internet connection.
  4. Force quit Linen and reopen it.
  5. Restart your device.

If it still does not work, contact us with your Apple ID email and approximate purchase date. We cannot see your payment details, but we can help troubleshoot.

How do I cancel a weekly subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not Linen directly.

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions > Linen

On Mac: App Store > Account > Subscriptions

Canceling stops future charges. You keep Pro access until the current billing period ends.

Does Linen work offline?

Yes. You can read, write, and organize notes offline.

You need an internet connection to buy or restore Linen Pro, and to load product prices in the purchase screen.

Does Linen collect my notes or personal data?

No. Your note content stays on your device. Linen does not upload your notes to our servers.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Preview looks wrong or export failed. What can I try?

  1. Check your markdown syntax (use the GFM Reference template if needed).
  2. Switch to Preview and back to refresh the view.
  3. For export issues, try again with a stable internet connection.
  4. Update Linen to the latest version from the App Store.
  5. Restart the app.

If a specific note keeps failing, try exporting as markdown first to save your content.

How do I delete a note or folder?

Note: Swipe or use the note’s context menu to delete.

Folder: Use the folder’s context menu to delete. Deleting a folder does not delete the notes inside it. Notes move out of that folder.
